Why Florida Has the Highest Demand for Tint Exemptions

Florida's combination of extreme UV exposure, an aging population, and year-round sunny conditions creates more medical need for darker window tint than almost any other state.

UV Index 11-12

Extreme UV Exposure

South Florida's UV index reaches "extreme" levels (11-12) for most of the year. Miami averages 266+ sunny days annually. Standard auto glass blocks only a fraction of UVA rays that penetrate vehicle windows.

#1 in Melanoma

Skin Cancer Capital

Florida leads the continental US in melanoma diagnoses per capita. Post-melanoma patients and those at high risk are frequently recommended to minimize all UV exposure, including while driving.

4.5M Residents 65+

Largest Retiree Population

Florida's large senior population drives high rates of cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma — all conditions that cause debilitating glare sensitivity behind the wheel.

3-4x Lupus Rate

Elevated Autoimmune Risk

Florida's large Caribbean and Hispanic communities experience lupus at 3-4x the national average rate. UV-triggered lupus flares are a serious concern for daily commuters across the state.

Florida Window Tint Law Limits

Under Florida Statutes §316.2953 and §316.2954, Florida sets specific VLT (Visible Light Transmission) limits for each window. Without a medical exemption, these are the darkest tint levels you can legally have. Violations start at $116 fine per ticket.

Note: Florida does not require annual vehicle safety inspections, so tint is primarily enforced through traffic stops by FHP and local police departments. Officers use portable tint meters to measure VLT on the spot.

Medical Conditions That Likely Qualify in Florida

Florida's extreme UV environment means many light-sensitive and skin conditions are particularly aggravated here. The conditions below are commonly associated with tint exemption approvals. If you have existing documentation from your doctor, you may be eligible.

Compliant With Florida Law

Our exemption certificates are issued by physicians licensed under the Florida Board of Medicine and comply with the requirements of Florida Statutes §316.2953 and §316.2954. Certificates are accepted by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), Florida Highway Patrol, and all county and municipal law enforcement agencies across Florida.

Florida does not require a separate state filing or DMV registration for tint exemptions. Your certificate itself serves as proof of exemption when presented to law enforcement.
